We didn’t start our ecommerce journey too long ago, but when we launched, it was immediately clear that there is a lot of bad information out there about running an ecommerce store–which was pretty easy to find. There is also a lot of good information out there which was pretty hard to find. The information I needed for my ecommerce business–at the time I needed it, for the stage I was at- that was nearly impossible to find!
Naturally, as we’ve gone through starting an ecommerce storefront, this has led us to end up making decisions using a combination of our own experience, gut feelings, and very limited information. I think this is the curriculum for the school of hard knocks… It made the joy of starting and running our own business, something less than joyful – a struggle. Ben Horowitz describes it best in his book “The hard thing about things:”
The Struggle is when you wonder why you started the company in the first place.
The Struggle is when people ask you why you don’t quit and you don’t know the answer.
The Struggle is when your employees think you are lying and you think they may be right.
The Struggle is when food loses its taste…”
If we had just had the right advice, or heard the right experiences, we could have avoided a lot of the struggle. In fact, if we could have just been able to interact with someone who was doing the same thing we were doing but was just a little further ahead, we could have avoided many of the missteps that we took.
That’s why I started this blog. I don’t know as much about ecommerce as I would like, but I know more than I did last week. If there happens to be someone going through this journey and they’re where I was last week, I would hope I could say something that would help their journey be a little less of a struggle and a little more joy. Let’s finish together similar to how Mr. Horowitz finishes his description of the “The Struggle:”
“The Struggle is where greatness comes from.”
